Karrie Westwood was born and raised in Oregon and moved to Montana in 1975 at the age of 18 to go to college. She has been gardening or farming most of her life. In 2008, when she married her husband, Robert Pfouts, they bought an 11 ½ acre farm in the Six Mile Valley of Montana, (20 miles West of Missoula, MT). Karrie was a nurse in Coeur d'Alene, ID for 20 years, found herself at a loss for something to do and decided to start planting lavender and other herbs after taking an Herbal Foundation course and adding to her knowledge of herbs and flowers.
The short growing season and the unique micro-climate of their mountain home led Karrie to learn about working with plant spirits and the spirit of the land to discover new ways to work with the plants and animals that live here. After many failed attempts to grow lavender in this harsh climate, where it gets -20 or worse and snow can arrive in September to May and even occasionally June, Karrie began to study plant spirits and how to plant with your land. Karrie discovered distillation and bought her first copper still in 2012. It was through much trial and error Karrie was able to create some amazing distilled and co-distilled oils and hydrosols.
Karrie has studied herbal medicine with Barbara St Dennis in Coeur d Alene, ID; Herbal Foundations with Elaine Sheiff; John Goichovitch of Green Path Herb School; Distillation at the Maui Aromatherapy Institute; International aromatherapy with Ann Harmon; Aromatherapy Foundation Certification with David Crow; Flower Essence with Alaska Essence, Steve Johnson; and owned and operated Meadowsweet Herbs from 2013 to 2018.
